Anyone who seriously practices magic makes mistakes.
The question isn't whether you'll make mistakes. The question is whether you'll learn from them or keep falling into the same trap.
I have observed thousands of people on their magical journey. I see the same mistakes again and again. Always the same traps.
In this article, I'll show you what they are. Not to discourage you, but to help you avoid them.
That doesn't mean you'll avoid them all. That's probably impossible. But you can avoid the worst ones.
That is probably the most common mistake.
A beginner reads about magic. He is enthusiastic. He thinks: "I perform a ritual every day. I meditate for 2 hours. I read 10 books at the same time."„
After one week he is exhausted. After two weeks he has quit.
Why this is wrong:
Magic isn't a sprint. It's a marathon. If you do too much too fast, you'll burn yourself out.
The mind needs time to adapt. The nervous system needs time to change.
If you move forward too quickly, your system will pull back – as a form of self-protection.
How to avoid it:
Start with 5-10 minutes per day. No more. After one month, increase to 15 minutes. After two months, to 20.
That's the right pace.
You're performing a ritual for something that isn't really your goal.
For example, "I'm casting a love spell because my best friend says I should be in love." – That's not your real goal. That's her goal for you.
Or: "I'm casting a wealth spell because I'm supposed to be rich." – But you don't know why. What is your real goal: freedom? Security? Respect?
Why this is wrong:
Magic doesn't work well if the goals aren't yours. Your subconscious will resist.
If you cast a spell that does not come from the heart, its power is weak.
How to avoid it:
Before you cast a spell, ask yourself: "Is this really MY goal? Or is it someone else's goal for me?"„
If that's not your goal, don't perform the spell.
You perform a ritual for prosperity. Then you sit at home and wait.
You don't apply for a job. You don't talk to people. You don't take any action.
You wait until the spell "works".
Why this is wrong:
Magic doesn't work in a vacuum. It needs an action in the physical world.
A ritual can motivate you. It can change your inner attitude. But it cannot work for you.
If you truly want prosperity, you must also work – physical work.
How to avoid it:
The rule: For every spell you cast, perform three physical actions.
For example, for a job spell:
That's how real magic works.
You start practicing magic. Your friends say, "That's nonsense. That's demonic. That's lost."„
You must listen to her. You don't add your own doubt, but you hear her doubt.
Doubts take root. After a few weeks, you give up.
Why this is wrong:
Your mind is receptive. The beliefs of others can influence yours.
If you are surrounded by people who don't support you, your practice will be difficult.
This isn't supernatural. It's psychological. Your mind has difficulty holding onto two beliefs at once.
How to avoid it:
Find people who support you. This doesn't mean you have to give up all your old friends. But find at least one person – or community – who respects your practice.
That makes a big difference.
You perform a ritual on Monday. On Wednesday it didn't "work". You think that magic doesn't work.
You don't ask: "Has my inner attitude changed?" or "Do I see other opportunities?"„
You expect dramatic external changes – immediately.
Why this is wrong:
Magic works slowly. The first changes are subtle. The external changes take longer.
If you expect everything to happen immediately, you will be disappointed.
How to avoid it:
Set realistic expectations.
Internal change: 1-4 weeks. Behavioral change: 2-8 weeks. External change: 1-3 months.
Give the ritual time.
You perform rituals, but you don't take care of sleep, nutrition, or exercise.
You expect the spell to heal you. That the ritual will make you happy.
That doesn't work. Not because magic is weak, but because the body doesn't function properly.
Why this is wrong:
Magic needs a functioning body. A vessel in which it can operate.
If your body is suffering, the magic cannot work well.
How to avoid it:
Priorities:
In this order.
You read about Wicca. It doesn't really work for you. Then you try Hermeticism. Not right. Then Shamanism. Not right.
After a few months you give up because "nothing works".
Why this is wrong:
You change things too often. You don't give a tradition enough time to work.
Magic requires consistency and time.
How to avoid it:
Choose ONE tradition. Practice it seriously for at least 3 months. THEN assess whether it works.
Don't change it every week.
That's subtle.
You perform a ritual. Then you "look" for evidence that it works.
Your neighbor said "Hello" – "That's a sign!"„
It's raining – "The universe is speaking to me!"„
You interpret chance as magic.
This is not magic. This is self-deception.
Why this is wrong:
If you constantly deceive yourself, you don't trust your own mind. You become paranoid. You see signs everywhere.
That's not healthy.
How to avoid it:
Really check. Has anything actually changed? Or did I just imagine something?
Be honest with yourself.
You don't like the way your mother lives. You cast a spell to make her "make better decisions".
That's not ethical. That's control.
Why this is wrong:
How to avoid it:
The rule: Magic for yourself. Not for others.
If you want to help someone, first ask: "Can I cast a healing spell for you?" Then wait for "Yes" or "No".
This is more subtle than normal ego, but it is more toxic.
A normal ego says: "I am better than others."„
The spiritual ego says: „I am more spiritual/enlightened/advanced than others. I understand truths they do not understand.“
That's even more arrogant. Because it disguises itself as "spiritual".
Sign 1: "I am more awake than others"„
You think you are "awakened" and most people are "asleep".
That is spiritual ego.
The truth is: Everyone is on their own path. There is no such thing as "awakening again." There are only "different perspectives.".
Sign 2: „My way is the right way“
You believe that YOUR tradition is the best. YOUR practices are the best.
All other paths are less.
That is spiritual ego.
The truth is: there are many genuine ways. All of them can work.
Sign 3: „Normal people don’t understand“
You speak of "normal people" as if they are below you.
„"They don't understand how deep truth works."“
That is spiritual ego.
The truth is: "Normal people" are just as wise as spiritual people. They simply have different focuses.
Sign 4: "I have special abilities"„
You believe you have special psychic powers that others don't have.
„"I can see auras. I can feel energy. I am different."“
That is spiritual ego.
The truth is: many people can learn to do these things. You're not special.
Sign 5: „I am too spiritual for normal things“
You avoid everyday work, money, and relationships because they are "not spiritual".
That is spiritual ego.
The truth is: ordinary life is part of life. It is not subordinate to spirituality.
Sign 6: „Others should follow my path“
You are trying to convert other people to your practice.
„"If you would only do this, you would awaken."“
That is spiritual ego.
The truth is: people find their own way. You can offer them something, but you can't force it.
Sign 7: "I am here for a specific task"„
You believe that the universe has specifically chosen you to heal the world.
„"I am a light worker. My task is important."“
That is spiritual ego.
The truth is: Every person is important. Everyone has a purpose. You are not special.
First: It distorts your practice.
If you believe you know more than everyone else, you won't learn. You'll simply confirm what you already believe.
Secondly: It's damaging your relationships.
People don't want to be around someone who thinks they're better than them. You'll become isolated.
Thirdly: It holds you tight.
The ego (spiritual or not) is a prison. It prevents you from experiencing real change.
Test 1: The Humility Question
Do you often ask yourself, "What I don't know?"„
Or are you asking yourself more: "What do I know that others don't?"„
The first one is healthy. The second one is ego.
Test 2: The Other People Question
If someone disagrees with you, do you listen to them?
Or do you think: „They don’t understand?“
The first one is healthy. The second one is ego.
Test 3: The everyday question
Do you enjoy doing normal things (working, eating, spending time with family)?
Or do you avoid them because they are "not spiritual"?
The first one is healthy. The second one is ego.
Test 4: The Success Question
When a ritual works, do you think: "Great, I'm learning"?
Or do you think: „I am so talented“?
The first one is healthy. The second one is ego.
Step 1: Recognize it
The first step is simply to see that it's there. Not to judge. Just to see.
Step 2: Practice humiliation
It sounds strange, but it works.
Deliberately making mistakes. Deliberately not knowing all the answers. Deliberately following others who are more experienced.
This isn't self-abasement. It's acknowledging that you don't know everything.
Step 3: Serving others
The best antidote to ego is service.
When you help someone without expectation – no „thank you“, no recognition – your ego weakens.
Step 4: Keep the reason
Remember: You are human. You make mistakes. You don't know everything. You are not special.
That's not pessimistic. That's realistic.
And realism is the best antidote to spiritual ego.
You meditate for 3 hours a day. You constantly perform rituals. You read magic books instead of working.
This isn't practice. This is escape.
You withdraw from real life in order to live in spirituality.
The cure: Balance. Spirituality should be 10-20% of your life. The rest should be normal.
You spend a thousand euros on crystals. You pay for courses you don't need. You buy items that you're told are "magical".
Then you'll be broke.
The cure: The best magic costs nothing. Real teachers are free or cheap. Resist the temptation to buy everything.
You begin to see dreams as facts. "The universe told me this would happen" – that was just a dream.
You make real decisions based on dreams.
That's not healthy.
The cure: Distinguish between dreams and reality. Dreams can provide information, but they are not facts.
You cast a love spell. It doesn't work. You cast it again. And again. And again.
Now you are obsessive and desperate.
That is the opposite of magic.
The cure: If something isn't working, stop. Do something else. Come back later when you're clear-headed.
| Mistake | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Too much too fast | Burnout | Start with 5 minutes a day |
| False goals | Weak results | Ask yourself if it's YOUR goal |
| Pure magic, no action | Nothing happens | Perform physical actions |
| Wrong environment | Doubters undermine you | Find supportive people |
| Unrealistic expectations | disappointment | Give it time |
| Ignored body | Magic works weakly | Take care of sleep/food |
| Constant change of tradition | No depth | Practice one for 3+ months |
| Self-deception | paranoia | Check honestly |
| Magic for others | Does it harm you | Ask for permission first. |
| Spiritual Ego | Isolation, stagnation. Growth | Practice humility |
A: Probably not. Almost everyone makes these mistakes. The important thing is that you learn and move on.
A: Not all of them. But you can learn from them. That's the most important thing.
A: Ask someone you trust. Say, "Am I overthinking my spirituality?" True friends will tell you the truth.
A: That's okay. Acknowledge it. Get out of it. Learn from it. Move on.
A: Not all of them. With this knowledge, you can avoid many. But you'll probably still make a few. That's part of learning.
A: 1-2 years of serious practice. After 1-2 years you will start to see real differences.
A: Self-deception. If you deceive yourself, you can't truly learn.
Here is the central truth:
Mistakes are not the opposite of learning. They are learning.
Every great practitioner has made these mistakes. Many of these mistakes. Many times.
That's not bad. That's necessary.
The problem isn't making mistakes. The problem is making the same mistake over and over again.
With this knowledge, you can avoid big mistakes. And if you do make mistakes, you'll learn faster.
That's all I wish for you: to learn faster.
Not to make you feel bad. But to help you grow faster.
Mistakes happen. Make them quickly. Learn from them. Move on.
That's real progress.
This article was written for people who want to understand that the path to mastery is not without mistakes – but also not without the ability to learn.
