Cairo After nearly 20 years of planning and construction, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Cairo has officially opened its doors. The opening marks a historic moment for Egypt, as the museum houses the world's largest archaeological complex and is considered a new flagship of the nation.
The gigantic cultural project, conceived in 1992 and built in 2005, covers an impressive area of 500,000 square meters – roughly the size of 70 football fields. The total cost of constructing the museum exceeded one billion US dollars, underscoring the immense investment and the significance of the project.
Visitors can look forward to twelve spacious exhibition halls showcasing an unparalleled collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts.
