Stuttgart. Mercedes-Benz has launched its latest and arguably most powerful attack on the electric mid-size segment. Yesterday, the Stuttgart-based premium manufacturer unveiled the new CLA electric sedan, which is attracting attention not only with its elegant design but above all with its impressive technical specifications. With a targeted range of up to 600 kilometers (according to the WLTP standard), the CLA clearly positions itself as a direct and serious competitor to the world's best-selling electric car, the Tesla Model 3.

Efficiency as the key to leadership

The new CLA is the first model based on the groundbreaking modular Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture (MMA). This new platform was designed from the ground up with a focus on maximum efficiency and minimum energy consumption. Experts see the new E-CLA-Class as a paradigm shift, as Mercedes-Benz, while traditionally emphasizing high performance, is now focusing on practical parameters such as range.

„The CLA is our promise to the future: It combines luxury, aerodynamics and groundbreaking efficiency at a level that has never been achieved in this segment before,“ a company spokesperson explained at the presentation.

According to Mercedes, the magic number of 600 kilometers of range is made possible by several factors:

• Aerodynamics: The design of the CLA has been highly optimized to achieve an extremely low drag coefficient, which is crucial for low fuel consumption.
• Novel battery technology: The MMA platform enables the use of high-voltage battery packs, which allow for both high energy density and more efficient charging processes.
• In-house developed electric drive: The powertrain was completely redesigned to minimize losses and ensure optimal energy efficiency.

A declaration of war on Tesla

For years, the Tesla Model 3 has dominated the compact electric premium sedan market, primarily due to its range and technology. With the unveiling of the E-CLA, Mercedes-Benz is now sending a clear signal that it is ready to challenge this dominance.

While the current Tesla Model 3 in its Long Range versions also achieves ranges of over 600 km (WLTP), the new CLA, with its luxurious interior, state-of-the-art MBUX infotainment system and classic Mercedes-Benz build quality, is designed to appeal to customers who value a traditional premium standard without having to compromise on range.

Market launch and outlook

The new CLA will not only be launched as a sedan, but subsequently also presumably as an electric shooting brake to cover the sporty station wagon segment.

Although the exact prices are not yet fixed, the electric CLA is expected to be priced in the upper mid-range, alongside the Model 3 and its German competitors such as the BMW i4. The CLA's market launch is planned for next year and is eagerly anticipated by industry observers, as it is seen as a litmus test for the ability of established German manufacturers to gain ground in the mass market for electric mobility.
